Some Common Questions

When you deal with Abba Skip Hire won't be hiring from a company on the other side of the country but you will be employing people who live nearby and know your area. We aim to give you the best advice we can to help you with the work you have to do. If you can't find out what you need to know here, please get in touch with us by free phone or using our contact form.

How much does it cost?

We offer several options that should suit most people's needs and aim to be competitive. If you call or contact us we will give you a clear price with no obligation and no sales patter.

Why does rubbish disposal cost so much?

The biggest part of the cost of skip hire or a skip bag goes on Land Fill Tax. It's not cheap to dispose of waste and we're being warned that land fill space is running out!

We are encouraged to recycle as much of our waste as we can and Abba Skip Hire is committed to that. The rest of the money goes towards maintenance of our equipment and other overheads and of course, to pay our skilled and experienced work-force.

Why Choose Abba Skip Hire?

Well, since you're asking, because we are near to where you live, offer free friendly advice; we do our best to be as flexible as possible and place an emphasis on customer satisfaction. These days when you hire a skip you have no idea what company will deliver it. Don't be fooled by the idea of a national company. They sub-contract to another firm who may be under pressure to cut corners to get to the next customer.

We live and work in the Sevenoaks area and survive on our good reputation. We are as concerned to look after this part of our environment as you are and want to work in partnership with our customers to be as Green as we can be.

What happens to my rubbish?

First of all we take it to a transfer station where the contents are sorted. This is where anything that can be recycled will be separated from other types of rubbish before being taken to land fill or recycling plant.

What if I want a skip on the road?

Because of local regulations we can not leave a skip on the side of the road. If this is the only way that you can get a skip you will need to apply to the local council. Some authorities will charge for this but not always. You need to give them at least three days notice and preferably a little more.

What if I can’t be there when the skip is delivered or collected?

Just let us know by telephone where the skip needs to go. By arrangement we will also deal with a neighbour. Just let us know. For payment purposes, you can pay by credit card over the phone.

Why can’t I move my skip nearer my rubbish?

When the driver deposits your skip he'll be sure to get it as close to your rubbish as possible taking into account health and safety as well as access. Also, if the skip lorry can drop it off, that's one way to be sure the skip lorry can pick it up!

If you move a skip after our driver has left, there is no guarantee that we can collect it safely. Have you ever tried pushing a skip full of rubbish? The only sure way to collect it then might be to empty it first.

How long can I have the skip for?

Our term of hire permits use of the skip for 10 days excluding the day of delivery so we aim to collect on the 11th day. We have other customers and a limited number of skips and plan our deliveries as much in advance as we can.

If you are not sure about how long you might need a skip for, why not consider one or two skip bags? That way you can get a really good idea how much space you have to fill and once it's done, arrange collection.

What if I need to have my skip for longer?

This might be possible by negotiation. There may be a small charge.

Do you recycle all of my rubbish?

We aim to recycle as much as we can and 90% is our target. It isn't always possible however and that's why we ask you to take care over how you use your skip and fill it. Try not to mix rubbish up too much and keep it as sorted as possible in your skip. Some items are clearly reusable such as soil or rubble but mixing soil and rubble up for example, makes them both difficult to recycle.

Can you take my husband/wife?

Well we do our best in every situation but this one's beyond us! Perhaps you need to have flowers delivered or arrange a romantic weekend. Don't worry, we can still arrange for a skip when you get back and help with your clean start!

What if I am unsure about anything?

It's always best to ask. Our friendly staff will always discuss your needs with you. If you have any items that might be explosive or flammable, then please draw this to our attention. We will be able to tell you if we can remove the items and may be able to advise you what to do if we can't.

Can You take any Electrical Items?

This should not be a problem but if you have something particularly unusual, it might be best to check with us first. We cannot take refrigeration equipment.

What about paint tins?

We're OK with paint tins, especially empty ones. If you include full tins of paint, it might be helpful to make sure they won't burst open or at least tip the driver off.

Is it Possible the Skip Will Damage my Driveway?

Well it is possible. If you are in any doubt discuss it with us and our driver will take extra care. There may be a way to protect your driveway with boards and again, this is something you should enquire about.

If you are really worried, then why not consider using a skip bag? That will be much more gentle.

How Full is Full?

It's important never to overfill a skip and we cannot transport a skip that is overloaded.

This is because we have to be sure that the load is safe as well as because we are charged by weight when the rubbish is sorted and eventually, disposed of. If you are not sure about how big a skip you need our advice is always to get more than you think. Our advice is a level load. If a skip is overfilled our driver will not be able to remove it until the load is level.

What’s so difficult about Asbestos?

There are specific regulations that cover asbestos disposal and we are not licensed to take it. If you have asbestos to dispose of you should contact your local council. If out driver finds asbestos in a skip, it will be returned immediately.

Why do you Cover a Small Area?

We only cover a small area because we are a small company. Our boundaries are set partly because of that but also because of other regulations for instance regarding our vehicle and the carriage of waste across certain boundaries.

Our map gives a rough guide to where we will travel to but there might be some leeway. For instance if we are delivering near to you and we can fit you in or perhaps, if you want several skips. It's always worth asking and the most straightforward way is to use the contact form to tell us where and when and we will get back to you. Your street name and Post Code might help us decide.
